Cannot ping esxi1 and esxi2 - even tho on same network

Hi, here's my setup:

I have:

* 2 esxi's - esxi1 & esxi2

* Each esxi has one VM - esxi1 has a VM named DC and esxi2 has a VM named vcenter

From the VM (DC), I can ping the VM (vcenter) under esxi2, but I'm unable to ping esxi2

From the VM (vcenter), I can ping the VM (DC) under esxi1, but I'm unable to ping esxi1

esxi1 cannot ping esxi2 and vice versa

I'm using VMNet8 and the firewalls have been turned off on the VMs.

I'm unable to add the esxi1 host onto vcenter since it's not pingable.

Can anyone help?

Re: How to completely disable time synchronization in a Windows server VM

Just a thought:

In your VM, is the setting to synchronise or set the time automatically has been disabled?

If not, it is probably because when you turn on your VM, it queries a NTP and finds out what is the actual date.

The option is usually available if you right click on the time on Windows' task bar and choose "Adjust date/time"

I hope that helps

Re: How to use Vmotion in Vsphere 6.0 for live migration of VMs

Welcome to the Community,

what you basically need for vMotion are at least two ESXi hosts, and vCenter Server with at least "Essentials Plus" licensing. In addition to this you'll have to setup vMotion in the ESXi hosts' network. Although vSphere 5.5 and newer allow to live migrate both (host and storage), vMotion is usually used with the VMs stored on shared storage.

I fixed this issue for myself by editing line 39 to the following.  Note that the only change is "{0}/{1}/{2}" to "{1}/{0}/{2}"

$itemDate = ("{1}/{0}/{2}" -f $item.name.Substring(6,2),$item.name.Substring(4,2),$item.name.Substring(0,4))

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Just checked - the .exe is located in Program Files (x86).

Re: Split a VMDK disk hosting 2 partitions

VMware Converter has an advanced option which allows to split partitions, i.e. store them in separate virtual disks.

Depending on the size of the disk/partitions, and the current partition table, there might be other options if downtime matters.

Problems Exporting VMs as OVF templates in vSphere Web Client 5.5.

Hello,

I'm trying to export some VMs off of an ESXI host using the 5.5 web client, but get this error:

"Could not connect to the remote resource: URL using bad/illegal format or missing URL"

Does anyone have any idea what this means and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Joe

Thanks Andre, I actually ended up connecting through the windows environment and got everything working.

No. At least none that I'm currently aware of.

I assume that with "software licensing issues" you are also thinking of technical limitations/maximums.

Upgrade path to vSphere 6 with multiple sites

Here's what I currently have at 3 different sites. All with separate SSO domains.

Site 1 - vCenter Server 5.5 on a Windows Server and local SQL database

Site 2 - vCenter Server 5.5 on the appliance

Site 3 - vCenter Server 5.5 on the appliance

Goal - All upgraded to vCenter Server 6. Utilize enhanced linked mode between all 3 sites. If one site goes down, other 2 sites function fine. When the downed servers is back, it functions fine with the others.

I'm not sure the best way to get to my goal. Will this be supported? Do I need to have one SSO domain before I go to 6? The third topology down on KB2108548 looks close to what I'm describing, but the KB does not name the topology or give an upgrade path for it. I'm looking forward to the new features of 6 and would appreciate some help to get my architecture done correctly.

We are experiencing the same problem.  Using CentOS 6.8 with kernel 2.6.32-642.4.2.el6.x86_64.  Error message on the command line is "The operation is not supported for the specified parameters".  Command was "vmrun -T player PATH_TO_VMX_FILE nogui".  We tried the option "gui" at the end, too, with the same error.  The log file states:

2016-09-20T10:54:38.398-06:00| vthread-4| I125: Player installed version is 12.5.0

2016-09-20T10:54:38.398-06:00| vthread-4| I125: Loading Vix implementation library /usr/lib/vmware-vix/Workstation-12.0.0/64bit/libvix.so

2016-09-20T10:54:38.401-06:00| vthread-4| I125: No implementation libraries loaded, cannot call 'Vix_GetErrorText'

The /lib64/libz.so.1: version 'ZLIB_1.2.3.3' is not currently available for CentOS 6.  It is available for CentOS 7.  We cannot upgrade to CentOS 7 on this particular system due to other dependencies for the work being done on the system.

Can this please be fixed to run on CentOS 6.8 kernel version 2.6.32-642+?  We had to update from VMware Player 6 to VMware Player Workstation Player 12.5 in order to get past another VMware Player problem with CentOS 6 kernel 2.6.32.642+.  So, to go from one problem to another has not been appreciated.

vSphere Data Protection 6.1 Image backup creating SQL Backups in guest

I have vSphere Data Protection 6.1.2.19 backing up a set of VMs on a Image job. This job appears to be attempting SQL Database backups, as I get a cascade of errors in the event log:

Event 12362, VSS- A shadow Copy LUN was not detected in the system and did not arrive.

Event 1, SQLVDI - SQLVDI: Loc=SignalAbort. Desc=Client initiates abort. ErrorCode=(0)

Event 3041, MSSQLSERVER- BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE model.

Event 18210, MSSQLSERVER- BackupVirtualDeviceFile::SendFileInfoBegin: failure on backup device '{D4F45946-222F-4984-B8DC-7943DE4D38E2}1', Operating system error 995(the I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.

How can I disable the SQL Backups in a VDP Image backup? I'm handling the SQL backups entirely outside of VDP.

I am attempting to assign a license to a ESXi server, but when I go to Home -> Administration -> Licensing, I get the following error:

An internal error occurred in the vSphere Client

This occurs with vSphere Client 6.0

Occurring on every user who has administrative access.

Any help is appreciated!

Re: how to set new external HD used on a different Mac to see Fusion ( Virtual Machine Library) on a new Mac?

Hi there,

You can hack the vminventory preference file.

Just change the paths to the .vmx files to be accurate/current.

~/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmInventory

Open it with a text editor, make changes, save.

Make sure Fusion isn't running when you edit the file.

Windows 10 guest on Ubuntu 14.04 host freezing to the point that Workstation will not close

$

I've been having problems over the past few weeks with my VMware Workstation 12.5 Pro guest session freezing up completely. I believe this started happening after upgrading to a  Windows 10 guest, although that was several months ago, and I've only really noticed the freezing more recently.

  • Host machine is Ubuntu 14.04, 64 GB RAM, single 12-core Xeon CPU.
  • Guest: Windows 10, and now 10 anniversary edition. 12 GB RAM, 4 cores. 20 GB allocated in Workstation to all guests.
  • This has occurred with both Workstation 12 Pro, and with the 12.5 recent 12.5 update - no change.
  • Upgrade to  Windows 10 Anniversary Edition (after upgrading to 12.5) did not affect this.
  • It never occurs when I'm using the VM actively. It occurs when I'm working on some other task / not interacting with the VM, perhaps for a few minutes, or maybe only after idling for several hours.
  • It does not always occur - I can leave the VM up for days with no problem. Sometimes.
  • When it occurs, you cannot power off the VM (let alone a graceful shutdown) - Workstation responds saying you cant close it when the guest is active (something to that effect). I've let it run for hours, but it never recovers. You must kill the vmware process to escape.
  • CPU utilization is often (but I think, not always) high on the guest when this occurs. (as monitored in the host). Host still has plenty of CPU resources and functions normally.

Thanks for any suggestions on either how to diagnose, or what to try to avoid this.
